OEM vs. Aftermarket Brake Pads: What’s Actually Different?

Both are real options here. Here’s the honest difference, and the actual warranty on each.

Two Real Options

Not a Trick Question

“OEM” (original equipment manufacturer) parts are made to the exact spec your vehicle’s manufacturer originally installed. “Aftermarket” covers everything else — a wide range that runs from economy parts to options built to match or exceed OEM performance. Neither one is automatically the wrong answer, and we install both, depending on your vehicle, your budget and what you tell us you want.

What We Install

What We Actually Put on Your Car

For most brake jobs, we use O’Reilly’s BrakeBest Select line unless you specifically ask for OEM or another premium option — we’ll always tell you which one we’re quoting before we start, not after.

The real difference between the two isn’t marketing. OEM pads are formulated and tuned specifically for your vehicle’s exact braking system, which can matter for noise, dust and pedal feel on some vehicles. Quality aftermarket pads can match that performance and cost less; lower-tier aftermarket pads can trade away some of that fit-and-feel to hit a lower price. We’ll tell you plainly which category a given part falls into.

The Real Terms

The Warranty, Stated Plainly

BrakeBest Select brake pads carry O’Reilly’s Limited Lifetime warranty — per O’Reilly’s own policy, the original part is warrantied for as long as the original purchaser owns the vehicle. BrakeBest Select rotors carry a separate 2-year limited warranty. These are two different terms, not one blanket “lifetime” promise, and pads and rotors shouldn’t be lumped together.

Real limits worth knowing before you assume more than the warranty actually covers: it applies to defects in materials or workmanship, not ordinary wear — the part has to fail because something was wrong with it, under normal use. Labor to replace a warrantied part isn’t included. Claims involving improper installation, misuse, neglect, modification, environmental damage, or racing/off-road use can be denied. And you’ll need your original sales receipt to make a claim.

If you choose OEM or another premium part instead, it carries that part’s own manufacturer warranty — we’ll go over the specific terms with you at write-up rather than quote a single number that’s supposed to cover every make.

Why It Matters

Why We Tell You Which Tier We’re Quoting

Plenty of shops quote “brake pads” as a single line item and let the tier stay invisible. We’d rather you know exactly what’s on the estimate — economy, mid-tier BrakeBest Select, or OEM — because the tier is what actually determines both the price and the warranty that applies. A written estimate before we touch anything is Michigan law above $50 anyway; naming the actual part is just being straight with you within that estimate.

Questions

Straight Answers

Is OEM always the better choice?

Not automatically. OEM is tuned specifically to your vehicle, which can matter for noise and pedal feel. A quality aftermarket part can match that performance for less money. It depends on the vehicle and what you're prioritizing — we'll walk through it with you.

Will aftermarket brake pads hurt my braking performance?

A quality aftermarket pad, correctly matched to your vehicle, performs the job it's rated for. Performance varies more by the specific part's quality tier than by OEM-vs-aftermarket alone, which is why we tell you which tier we're quoting.

What warranty comes with the brake pads you install?

Our common line, O'Reilly's BrakeBest Select, carries a Limited Lifetime warranty on pads (tied to the original purchaser) and a 2-year limited warranty on rotors — for defects in materials or workmanship, not ordinary wear, and labor isn't included. If you choose OEM instead, that part carries its own manufacturer's warranty, which we'll review with you.

Do I need anything to make a warranty claim on a part?

Yes — hold onto your original invoice from the visit. It's the standard requirement for a parts warranty claim.

Ask About Your Specific Vehicle.

We'll tell you which parts we'd recommend, and why, before anything is ordered.
